Working as a team, SAB participants evaluate community needs, choose a focus area, organize service/learning projects related to the focus area and advocate for change. Along the way students learn about their own leadership style, develop effective meeting techniques, and gain experience managing a project.
Students in grades 10-12 who have participated in one of the center's Youth programs (Mayor’s Award, Commissioners' Award, Youth Summer Service Week, or the Institute of Civic Engagement for Emerging Leaders) as well as Junior Leadership Durham participants are invited to apply. Applications are due in the fall. SAB members attend monthly planning and development meetings, organize a service/learning project, and participate in monthly service/learning projects throughout the school year.
