Volunteer: Reading Tutors

Looking for meaningful community service?

Become a reading tutor to a child at an under-resourced elementary school in the Durham area.

Augustine Literacy Project Triangle trains, places, and supports tutors at partner schools to deliver free, one-to-one, science-based literacy instruction to students who need additional support.

Twice weekly, our tutors deliver in-person reading instruction at elementary schools in the Triangle region of North Carolina. Our program aligns with the Science of Reading and uses the evidence-based Orton-Gillingham approach. Through multi-sensory, direct, explicit, structured, and sequential instruction, trained Augustine tutors deliver free, one-on-one instruction while building students’ confidence through consistent, caring relationships.

Your commitment: Reading tutoring twice a week for one hour for the duration of the academic year. You will be paired with one elementary school student with the goal of helping them achieve grade level reading competency.

Our commitment: Training, lesson plans, and a cohort model that offers in-person support during tutoring. We provide the structure so you can show up for a child who could not otherwise afford private tutoring.
