Volunteer: Disaster Shelter Volunteer - Lee County

This is the perfect opportunity for volunteers who want to support disaster response efforts when disaster strikes, but do not have the time for a consistent volunteer schedule. All Red Cross volunteer opportunities are scheduled based on the availability of the volunteer. Shelter volunteers are assigned to work in person in a Red Cross shelter before, during and/or after a disaster event. They complete tasks necessary for shelter operations and they interact with clients to ensure their needs are met. Shelter volunteers support the day-to-day activities within a shelter, which can include working in reception, registration, feeding, dormitory, information or other areas within a shelter. Training is required and the majority of training can be completed online. Fully trained shelter volunteers also have the opportunity to deploy to disasters across the state and nation to support large scale disasters in this role if they choose to do so.

Volunteers are encouraged to keep their availability up-to-date in our Volunteer Platform in preparation for disaster. When shelters are needed, volunteers are not committed to work, but are contacted and asked for their availability to support the shelter if that shelter is within 60 miles of their home address.

Volunteer: Disaster Action Team Member (DAT)

Every day people are forced from their homes due to fires, storms and other disasters. Single- and multi-family fires account for 90% of disaster responses. You can be part of a team that helps and responds to over 60,000 emergencies every year. DAT volunteers offer a caring and compassionate ear, work with affected families to ensure they have the disaster-caused needs met, such as lodging and clothing, and connecting them with long term recovery services. Our volunteers ensure that families don’t have to face tough times alone.

Volunteers are asked to sign-up for on-call shifts. This is based on your availability. Shift options include daytime, overnight and weekend shifts. During an on-call shift, you may receive a call to respond to multiple disasters (like home fires) in your community, or you may not receive any. Every shift is different.

DAT volunteers will serve throughout Harnett County when a disaster strikes.

If you are team-oriented and want to make a difference, please consider joining the Disaster Action Team and apply now. We supply all the training you need.
