Volunteer: Volunteer Golf Coaches

The SwingPals Vision is a world where every child feels valued and respected, free to pursue their passion and fulfill their mission..

Our mission is to build a foundation of health and strong character in children facing adversity. SwingPals uses golf as a medium through which students develop mindfulness and self-regulation skills, empowering them to pursue their passion and fulfill their potential to create positive change in their community. This holistic approach empowers students to step outside their comfort zones, challenge their status quo, and give them the self-efficacy to pursue their goals.

We are currently seeking passionate volunteers to join our team as golf coaches for in-school and afterschool programming. As a SwingPals coach, you are a guide for the students from the process of THINKING to DOING while swinging the golf club, helping them let go of control, explore their potential, and enjoy their golf game. You will support students to develop their social and emotional skills and be able to focus their mind in the moment to make purposeful, intentional choices. Beginner golfers are welcome and often make the best coaches!

Becoming a volunteer coach with SwingPals is about mentorship, empowerment, and creating meaningful connections. Our program helps students develop confidence, resilience, and mindfulness through the game, and your role as a coach is essential to that journey.

If you're ready to contribute to a brighter future for our children and our community, we invite you to get involved. Your support and coaching will make a significant difference in the lives of our students.

Volunteer: Seeking Volunteers across NC to Support a Statewide Radon & Lung Cancer Study

The Climate Impact on Lung Cancer via Exposure to Radon (CLOVER) Study is a statewide research project led by Duke University that examines how radon exposure and climate change impact lung cancer outcomes across North Carolina. The study includes two parts for participants: completing a brief survey and using a free radon test kit to measure radon levels in their home.

We are seeking volunteers from across the state to help connect community members with the CLOVER Study. Volunteers will play a vital role in sharing study information, encouraging participation, and helping distribute free radon test kits to residents.

What You’ll Do:

Share CLOVER Study materials in your community (flyers, brochures, or social media posts).

Connect with local organizations, churches, and community groups to spread awareness. Assist participants with completing the survey and radon test for full participation.

No research experience is needed—just an interest in public health and a willingness to engage your community. All training, materials, and ongoing support will be provided. By volunteering, you’ll help advance lung cancer prevention and environmental health research while protecting communities from harmful radon exposure.

Volunteer: VITA Volunteer

A VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) volunteer helps low- to moderate-income individuals and families—often including seniors, people with disabilities, and those with limited English proficiency—prepare and file their federal and state income tax returns for free.

Here’s a breakdown of role options:

1. Tax Preparation and Filing

Use IRS-provided software to prepare accurate returns.

Ensure all eligible credits and deductions (like Earned Income Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit) are claimed.

E-file returns securely for clients.

2. Client Assistance and Education

Interview taxpayers to gather necessary information and documents.

Explain the return to the client in plain language before filing.

Answer basic tax questions and provide general financial literacy tips.

3. Compliance and Confidentiality

Follow IRS standards of conduct and maintain strict confidentiality with client information.

Complete required IRS training and certification each tax season.

4. Team Collaboration

Work with other volunteers, site coordinators, and quality reviewers to ensure returns are correct.

Refer clients to other community resources when appropriate.

5. Optional Specializations

Some VITA volunteers focus on appointment setting, intake, translation, greeter duties, or quality review instead of tax prep itself.

In short, a VITA volunteer isn’t just crunching numbers—they’re empowering people by helping them meet their tax obligations, potentially increase their refunds, and better understand their finances.

Volunteer: Children's Displays Mover Helper

We need people, one or two days a year, to help rotate our displays across the Triangle.  You would drive to our director's home in North Durham and then spend several hours riding in his van, helping him remove and install display cases that the children love to activate with the press of a button.  Your volunteering, even for a day, helps our frugal charity save money in not having to pay a contractor to help us.

Most of the time is spent being a passenger, just chatting.  The work is not overly strenuous does require the ability to lift around 30 pounds for about 10 seconds. And you'll get to see lots of children enjoying the displays.

Volunteer: RSVP Woodworking and shared woodshop space: we need you!

The Bull City Woodshop is piloting a program where people from the community can come into the shop and use the tools and space for their personal projects. We are working to create staffed hours where open shop members can receive supervision and support while on the tools. The volunteer's responsibility for this time would be to: Be present at their open shop hours shift, be available to address general safety/usability concerns for open shop members, report any incidents or tool maintenance needs, and ensure that members have cleaned up before leaving the shop.

Volunteers are welcome and encouraged to use this time to work on their own projects! The idea is to help grow the open shop community as a common learning space, but help ensure that everyone feels safe and supported while they work!
Please use this form to indicate your interest in availability in participating in staffed hours. We are ideally looking to find regular volunteers for one 3-hour week shift with a pool of volunteers who can be asked for their availability if the regular volunteer is not. Open Shop Hours are Monday - Friday 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm and Sunday 8:30 am - 11:30 am.

This program is CURRENTLY RUNNING, and we need your help to keep it going!

Volunteer: Food Pantry Volunteers

Covid-19 brought to light the heartbreaking extent of food insecurity in our community. Iglesia Emanuel, together with a large group of dedicated volunteers, has responded to this challenge with a weekly food pantry, providing large boxes and bags of nutritious and culturally appropriate food. Volunteers work in 2-hour shifts, Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, making it possible for us to serve over 600 families a week. Students aged 14 and up are welcome to volunteer on their own. Children aged 10 and up are welcome to volunteer under the supervision of a parent or other accompanying adult. Volunteers need to be over 18 for traffic control positions.

In addition to volunteering on site, you can help support this ministry by donating shelf stable food or bags of rice and beans. We always need more protein items (canned chicken, tuna, or peanut butter), cereal, and other nutritious food to complement the fresh produce that we give.

Volunteer: RSVP Emergency Child Care Volunteer

National Emergency Child Care Network is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt public charity in Durham, North Carolina that provides free child care services to families who are experiencing an crisis or disaster. Our mission is to ensure every family has equal opportunity to access and utilize free emergency child care during a crisis or disaster.

We are recruiting Durham-based SENIOR volunteers to help local families who are in crisis or disasters. We've already helped (3) families in Durham with over 20 hours of free child care, families that desperately needed help and support. NEXT STEP: Please let us know which training you want to attend. All trainings are listed on our website under Volunteer Now: https://emergencychildcare.org/contact-2/

In only 5 months since the program was activated during Hurricane Helene recovery efforts, 115 Emergency Child Care Volunteers across 2 states (North Carolina and California) have provided 713 hours and 74 days of free emergency child care to 82 children and 50 families (96% in North Carolina). We now have over 400 volunteers registered to become active volunteers. All volunteers undergo trauma-informed training in Psychological First Aid, extensive vetting, and nationwide background checks to ensure they are qualified and screened to care for children. On average, our volunteers are activated 1-3 times per week to help families requesting emergency child care in North Carolina and California.

Our families really need you!! Please join our amazing group of volunteers.

We will provide volunteers with trauma training for children in disasters. We also provide you with a backpack of fun toys, reading books, coloring books and puzzles to play with the children. This is one-on-one child care so volunteers will need to be 18 and older and have reliable transportation. Skilled and trained volunteers are dispatched immediately after the family calls the crisis line for emergency child care services.

Volunteer child care providers will meet families at a disaster shelter, at the family's home, or where the disaster has occurred to ensure the safety and well-being of the children. While children are safe with a child care provider, the family has the time to deal with the crisis. This support, in result, reduces high levels of stress for the family, as well as the potential for violence, abuse, or neglect to the child during a crisis.

Child care after a disaster is a critical part of response and recovery. Studies have shown that children who have experienced trauma from disasters need extra time with caregivers to ask questions to understand the crisis, to talk about their experience, be listened to, have their feelings accepted, provided with a space to cry and express feelings, have special one-on-one playtime and extra attention, do something relaxing or fun, and feel safe, cared for, and loved (Helping Children and Youth Cope in the Aftermath of Disasters, SAMHSA). WHY THIS IS SO IMPORTANT Disasters are upsetting experiences for everyone involved, but especially for children. Disasters can leave children feeling frightened, confused, and insecure. Children may respond to disaster by demonstrating fears, sadness, or behavioral problems. Younger children may return to earlier behavior patterns, such as bedwetting, sleep problems and separation anxiety. Older children may also display anger, aggression, school problems or withdrawal. With so many natural disasters occurring today, and now the increase in school shootings, children are seeing and experiencing things they should not have to - being evacuated, seeing injured or dying people or animals, losing their home and belongings, losing immediate access to basic needs, being injured themselves, and feeling that their own lives are threatened. Children and families also suffer from post-disaster ongoing stress which includes transitional housing, living in shelters or hotels, losing contact with their friends and neighbors, losing things that are important to them, parental job loss, and the financial costs of reestablishing their previous living conditions. Children’s ability to cope with disaster or emergencies is often tied to the way parents cope. And, when parents are overwhelmed, sad, depressed, emotional, stressed and panicked, the children will not have the emotional care they need to heal. We can help children and families better cope when we provide them with social support systems such as free immediate child care when they need it most. Our program also brings incredible value to the volunteer care givers.

Our "grounds keepers" would rake the rubber mulch that is on the playgrounds, on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, to keep the base even for the safety of the children.  Also, the mulch around our plants and trees need some repair/care.  Also, we need someone to water plants, inside and outside.  One other task would be to sweep the walls and posts under the breezeway for webs, nests, dirt.  Finally, someone to wash our windows outside - throughout both buildings, probably once a year.  And, of course, anything else you see that needs some love and care!

We can work with you for your supplies and tools.

Thank you for donating your time to one of Lee County's most fun schools!

We look forward to meeting and working with you.

Volunteer: RSVP Food Pantry Volunteers

See sign-up genius for volunteer dates and times.

Volunteer: Disaster Shelter Volunteer - Lee County

This is the perfect opportunity for volunteers who want to support disaster response efforts when disaster strikes, but do not have the time for a consistent volunteer schedule. All Red Cross volunteer opportunities are scheduled based on the availability of the volunteer. Shelter volunteers are assigned to work in person in a Red Cross shelter before, during and/or after a disaster event. They complete tasks necessary for shelter operations and they interact with clients to ensure their needs are met. Shelter volunteers support the day-to-day activities within a shelter, which can include working in reception, registration, feeding, dormitory, information or other areas within a shelter. Training is required and the majority of training can be completed online. Fully trained shelter volunteers also have the opportunity to deploy to disasters across the state and nation to support large scale disasters in this role if they choose to do so.

Volunteers are encouraged to keep their availability up-to-date in our Volunteer Platform in preparation for disaster. When shelters are needed, volunteers are not committed to work, but are contacted and asked for their availability to support the shelter if that shelter is within 60 miles of their home address.

Volunteer: Volunteers needed for girls' bike program - no experience required!

We're looking for enthusiastic volunteers of all biking abilities and gender identities to lead our easy-to-follow curriculum. Groups meet once a week across Raleigh, Durham, Cary and the surrounding area. Email info@girlsingear.org for more information about specific locations.

Neither coaching nor biking experience is required. All you need to bring is your most joyful and dynamic self - we'll provide the rest. All coaches receive training and are supported by staff throughout their volunteer experience. We supply all lesson plans and coaching materials.

We teach life skills through bike skills for girls ages 5+. We find bikes to be an extraordinary tool for change in ourselves and our communities as a conduit for lessons on kindness, compassion, and inner strength. We do this through age-appropriate comprehensive curriculums that weave together social-emotional learning (SEL) with bike handling skills. Our no-questions-asked scholarship policy means that everyone can ride with us.

Each lesson has a theme that ties together the opening conversation, connections to biking, and a skill-building section. In this environment, conversations on asking for help lead to understanding how to change gears on a bicycle; resilience and grit are framed around what to do if you fall off your bicycle; and assertive communication opens up a lesson on hand-signaling while riding.

Learn more about getting involved in your community at: girlsingear.org/northcarolina.

Volunteer: Woodworking and shared woodshop space: we need you!

The Bull City Woodshop is piloting a program where people from the community can come into the shop and use the tools and space for their personal projects. We are working to create staffed hours where open shop members can receive supervision and support while on the tools.
