Connecting with Threads will be teaching sewing lessons twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:45-3:30pm) to 5th grade youth.  We are looking for volunteers to help us staff the program -- if you don't know how to sew, we will teach you what you need to know!

The projects we will be teaching are simple and the students will progress through the curriculum at their own pace with our support.  We will be teaching them both sewing by machine as well as hand sewing.  

The students will be making projects for themselves to keep as well as items to be donated to their elementary school.

Swim for Charlie will be hosting a masters (swimmers ages 18 and up) swim meet Sunday morning April 12th at the Orange County Sportsplex in Hillsborough, NC.

The meet is scheduled to start at 8:50 and timers are asked to get to the pool by 8:15 for an orientation.  

To run the meet Swim for Charlie will need 20 timers. 

Timers have 2 responsibilities: 1) make sure the right swimmer is in the right event, the right heat, and the right lane and 2) provide accurate backup times for every swim. 

A timer will be assigned to a lane and each lane will have a clipboard with a sheet of paper with the names of the swimmers for that lane with space to record the time for the swimmer. 

Timers are given a stopwatch to use at the meet.  The stopwatch is started when the starting beep sounds and is stopped when the swimmer touches the wall at the end of the swim.  Timers will then record the time on the sheet on the clipboard.

There are 2 timers for each lane.  There are chairs for the timers at each lane. 

Timers will be given a Swim for Charlie tee shirt and will be provided hospitality snacks/drinks throughout the meet.

Families Moving Forward is seeking dedicated volunteers to join our Study Buddy tutoring program. Each week, Monday-Thursday from 5:00pm until 6:00pm we provide an hour of one-on-one academic support for the school-aged children in shelter at FMF. Volunteers are asked to help with reading, writing, mathmatics and other skills to help our kiddos maintain their grades and build acdemic confidence!

Families Moving Forward is seeking an individual volunteer to help run the Kidz Store every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month from 4:00-5:00pm. The Kidz Store is a collection of donated toys that our kids can purchase using the "decision dollars" they earn from attending programming. The shopkeeper is responsible for welcoming the kids, completing transactions and upholding the integrity of the store by maintaining the fixed prices and store hours. This is a great way to meet and interact with the kids from FMF and help spread some joy!

As a Durham Community Food Pantry volunteer, you are part of a collaborative effort to end food insecurity in Durham and Orange counties. Roles vary day-by-day, as described below:

Monday: Building non-perishable boxes of food for distribution [standing, lifting is optional]

Tuesday: Sorting produce, food drive materials, deli, dessert, break, and other items for distribution [standing, sorting]

Wednesday/Thursday: Servicing clients with food distribution: car loader, runner, warehouse organization [walking, light lifting, car loading involves 15lbs lifting'

Wednesday: Sorting boxes, recycling, warehouse cleanup and produce box-making [standing]

The Treasurer is a key officer of the Board of the Merrick-Moore Community Development Corporation, entrusted with the organization's financial stewardship. This individual is responsible for overseeing all aspects of financial management, budgeting, and reporting, ensuring transparency and accountability. The Treasurer operates in strict compliance with North Carolina (NC) state and federal regulations, safeguarding the fiscal health and integrity of the Merrick-Moore Community Development Corporation.

Skills and Qualifications
• A bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or a related field is preferred.
• Demonstrated experience in financial management, budgeting, and reporting, preferably in a nonprofit or public sector setting.
• Knowledge of NC state laws and federal guidelines governing nonprofits.

These volunteers should feel comfortable tapping into their playful and creative side. The children come to our program right after school, so it’s important that the sessions do not feel like more classroom time. Presenters should design activities that are fun, expressive, relatable, and relevant to what the children are experiencing in their lives, especially as many of them are navigating the challenges of transitional housing.

The goal is to create a safe and inspiring space where children can open up, connect with one another, and explore new ideas and skills that help them imagine possibilities beyond their current circumstances. I am absolutely happy to support volunteers as they get comfortable, but it is important that they bring enthusiasm, creativity, and a genuine willingness to engage with the youth.

Volunteers may participate every Thursday or twice a month based on their schedule, and can work with the 6–12 group, the 13–18 group, or both.

We are looking for volunteer tutors who can support our children and teens (ages 6–18) in subjects like math, reading, and general homework help. Tutors will be placed on a list and may be scheduled 1–2 times per week based on the needs of our program families.

Tutoring sessions will take place in public locations such as the library or Barnes & Noble, where families can comfortably meet. A background check will be required to ensure the safety of our youth and families.

If you enjoy helping young people build confidence in their academic skills and want to make a meaningful impact, we’d love to hear from you.

These volunteers support the Fresh Produce Program by calling and texting between 5-10 participants between Monday and Wednesday each week to confirm their upcoming Saturday deliveries. An email with instructions is sent to all volunteers at the beginning of each week. Volunteers have the assistance of a script and FAQ document to successfully complete calls. This role is KEY for making sure deliveries get to the right people/places, and helping us stay in touch with the households we serve. Relationship building is encouraged!

We ask that volunteers sign up for one semester or summer of delivery confirmation calling at a time. It is not required that callers sign up to volunteer as a Delivery Confirmation Caller every week during that period, but at least once every 2-3 weeks is encouraged.

IMPORTANT: We manage volunteer sign-ups outside of HandsOn Triangle.  If you would like to sign up to be a Delivery Confirmation Caller, and are prepared to do so for a full semester or summer, please email Elliot at elliot.yoon@duke.edu. One-hour caller training, as well as a short online HIPAA training, is required.

These volunteers will pick up produce bags from Uncle Harry's General Store (1925 Yearby Ave, Durham, NC 27705) on Saturdays between 9:30 AM and 10:30 AM at their chosen time and deliver these items to participant homes. Driving may be up to a 2-hour commitment (eg, someone who picks up at 10:00 AM should plan to finish by 12:00 PM at the latest).

We routinely need 15-20 drivers to serve ~175 households each week. In order for us to generate driving routes based on an accurate headcount of drivers for the week, we ask that you sign up no later than 5 PM the day before distribution. Once routes are generated, an email with instructions will be sent to all volunteers within a few hours of their pick-up time. The more people who sign up, the quicker the routes are for everyone! We encourage you to bring along a friend for this role! Driving is much more fun with a buddy, who can help call participants to let them know that their delivery is on the way. These volunteers support the Fresh Produce Program by assisting our distribution leaders with quality-controlling produce items, packing produce into bags, and loading bags into delivery drivers' cars on Saturday distribution days between 8:30 AM and 11:30 AM.

These volunteers will coordinate with our non-Spanish-speaking drivers on Saturday distribution days by making calls to our Spanish-speaking participants to let them know that their produce delivery is on the way. Because many of the families we serve primarily speak Spanish, these volunteers are CRUCIAL to help us receive any special instructions or requests from participants. Volunteers are encouraged to sign up for multiple time slots/days!

Do you love dogs?  Make a dog’s day with a fun field trip away from the Adoption Center! By taking a dog out of the Adoption Center for just a few hours, you’ll provide them mental stimulation from new experiences and meeting new people as well as help them exert pent up energy. Another added bonus is that people who wouldn’t normally come down to the adoption center may meet their new furry friend through this program! Covid-19 brought to light the heartbreaking extent of food insecurity in our community. Iglesia Emanuel, together with a large group of dedicated volunteers, has responded to this challenge with a weekly food pantry, providing large boxes and bags of nutritious and culturally appropriate food. Volunteers work in 2-hour shifts, Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, making it possible for us to serve over 600 families a week. Students aged 14 and up are welcome to volunteer on their own. Children aged 10 and up are welcome to volunteer under the supervision of a parent or other accompanying adult. Volunteers need to be over 18 for traffic control positions.

In addition to volunteering on site, you can help support this ministry by donating shelf stable food or bags of rice and beans. We always need more protein items (canned chicken, tuna, or peanut butter), cereal, and other nutritious food to complement the fresh produce that we give.

Time-In Moms is a growing nonprofit serving moms in the Triangle by providing essential support—light cleaning, child care support, and meal support—so families can breathe, reset, and thrive. DCRC is seeking thoughtful and empowering volunteers to join our team providing services to victims of Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Human Trafficking who come to the office for legal or crisis services. This volunteer is the "Director of First Impressions" and welcomes survivors in, creating a sense of safety and peace when they come through the door or call the administrative line. Volunteers will also help in the office complete light administrative duties such as: Organizing supplies, creating volunteer notebooks, creating folders, etc.

You will receive 10 hours of training prior to starting independent shifts. No volunteer is put to work until they are confident and comfortable.

Our kitchen volunteers wipe down countertops, tables, organize supplies, put out snacks, and keep our kitchens neat and tidy for the guests that come to our facility. Shifts can vary according to the volunteer's schedule.

Our pantry volunteers take our food donations and organize them by expiration date in our pantry. They keep the pantry neat and organized so that our guests can find everything they need. Our pantry volunteers also put out 'grab and go" snacks for our guests so they can enjoy a treat as they return from the hospital.

Get a group of friends together to assemble Grab and Go Bags for our guests living at Family House.  You can customize the bags with fun messages and include your favorite non-perishable snacks, beverages and/or game books.  All of these items ease the burden of a patient or family member spending hours at UNC hospitals and can save them money since food items can be expensive at the hospital.  

You can drop these items off at Family House at any time of the day.  Our team will distribute them to guests and make sure our guests are well taken care of.

Review completed bible study lessons from prisoners by adding encouragement and scripture.

Our Student Ambassadors are a critical link in helping our organization get PORCH neighborhoods started in their home or college towns. Their role is to help bring awareness of food insecurity to the local community, mobilize local food drives, and identify potential neighborhood coordinators to help create a sustainable hunger relief program. The program is open to all high school or college students who are passionate about fighting hunger.

PORCH provides students with the knowledge, tools, and support needed - from food insecurity education, to how-to playbooks, to marketing materials, to a program advisor - to help ensure success.

We provide moms with 90-minute “time-ins” designed to ease the demands of daily life. Through trusted volunteers, we offer three essential services: light cleaning, meal support, and child care. Moms can select the service that will help them most, and volunteers step in to provide it with reliability, care, and compassion—just like a trusted friend or family member would. By giving moms space to breathe and refocus, we help strengthen families and build a stronger, more connected community.

Tours operate each Saturday March-October with additional opportunities for private tours and specialty tours. Tour guides can generally expect to host 1-2 tours a month. All materials provided!
