Needs From: Campbell Serve

The Museum of Durham History will be attending the Durham Farmers' Market and Black Farmers' Market this spring, summer and fall! We need volunteers to help represent the Museum, including talking about the Museum, programming and our current and future exhibits. Information to share will be provided. The Museum staff will set up and take down the booth and traveling exhibit. We are looking for two volunteers to serve each week.

Volunteers are crucial to the operation of the Museum of Durham History as we provide programs and experiences to Durham residents and visitors. Our commitment to volunteers is to provide meaningful volunteer experience and effective direction in an environment that is friendly, comfortable, educational, and fun.

We are specifically looking for long-term volunteers who are able to help on-site twice per month on average. Available shifts include Tuesday through Friday, 10 am - 1 pm, 1-5 pm; Saturday 10am-1pm, 1pm-3pm, and 3pm-5pm; Sunday, 12-2:30 pm, 2:30-5 pm; monthly 3rd Friday 5pm-8pm.

Key Responsibilities:

Assists with general museum reception and visitor services, meets and greets the general public at the reception deskProvides general information about the museum, exhibits and the communityAnswers the telephoneAssist in opening and closing procedures, depending on shift scheduleRelays accurate information about planned programs/events to visitorsEnsures all exhibit areas are tidy and functioningAssists visitors with recording their personal memories in the Story RoomCollects visitor feedback and communicates to staffAssists the Weekend Manager with any special projectsMay also assist in special projects based on skill-set and evaluation

 Skills to be Enhanced or Developed on the Job:

Will learn about the history of DurhamLearn to work within a team environmentWill learn about aspects of visitor/hospitality services through training and on-the-job experienceAn understanding of the inner workings of a non-profit museum.

Qualifications and Skills Preferred:

Must be 18 years or olderMust attend a brief Zoom introduction with Operations Manager, as well as a tour of the Museum and review of policies+proceduresMust enjoy working with the public, meeting new people, partnering with staff and volunteersMust possess good communication skillsGeneral knowledge and interest in the Durham communityIf interested, reach out to Clay Harrison at manager@modh.org
