Who We Are

The focus of Volunteers for Youth is delinquency prevention. Through the mentoring program, community service program, and teen court program, Volunteers for Youth works to provide young people with the tools to become responsible adults.

Volunteers for Youth’s mission is to provide services to Orange County youth that help them become contributing members of the community by:

  • cultivating their strengths
  • encouraging positive relationships
  • developing their ability to make responsible choices.

What We Do

Volunteers for Youth is an innovative, community organization providing diverse, quality programs to help local young people achieve their potential. Volunteers for Youth has four programs that serve the youth of Orange County, North Carolina:

  • Volunteer Mentor Program
Matches young people with adult mentors. Volunteers and young people commit to spending at least two hours a week together for one year.

  • Orange County Teen Court
Gives first time offenders an opportunity to take responsibility for their actions through an alternative court program. Youth are tried and sentenced by a jury of their peers. Fellow students take on the roles of attorneys, clerk, bailiff, and jurors to conduct these proceedings.
  • SMART Mentoring Program
Matches UNC students with local youth. Students develop relationships with their mentees in addition to enrolling in a sociology course focused on race, class, and gender.
  • The Juvenile Community Service and Restitution Program
Works with young people who have been court-ordered to complete community service hours in order to pay back the community for their behavior.
  • Every Girl Counts
Volunteers for Youth’s newest program, Every Girl Counts, brings together middle school girls and empowers them through a life skills curriculum that fosters pride, self-esteem and a sense of achievement.
